Here Are 5 Things You’ll Never Hear In Photography Workshops But Are Absolutely Necessary
I love workshops. I’ve attended lots of them. As the day goes by, I learn more and more. We live in an age where the internet brings you value even in the comfort of your home and that is a good thing. Good thing? It’s freaking amazing!!
But this can be your downfall. It takes more than the internet to learn. You need people around you. Real people. You need to pay for courses. No, I’m not asking you to buy anything, I’m simply telling you how serious you’ll take that course when you pay $50 or $700 for it. When you pay for it, you need it, and with that, you take action. On the internet, you consume and will hardly act. Why? Because it doesn’t cost you much.
So, what are these 5 things you need to hear as a photographer, both the beginner and the pro?
- Nobody is coming to save you. It’s a great thing to admire your heroes. I have some photographers who are always in my top 5 and that top 5 never changes. I love them! Some I’ve met and some I’ve not met. But this is one thing I learned early in life: “nobody is coming to save you." If you’re stuck in a boat and you lost your paddle in the middle of the sea, you might have to use your arm to drift to shore. Because nobody is coming. You’re alone (in some sense). Your heroes are not going to do your work for you. They can give you advice, even free courses, but they are not going to come and take your camera and shoot for you. They’ve also got things to do.
- The world isn’t fair. Most people don’t realize it. I’m not a fan of Hollywood but might of the time they depict this. The world of not fair! I should say that one more time, the world is not fair! We live in a capitalist world. You won’t get your “fair share" but you’ll get your what you're willing to work for and deserve. When people do not win or do not get what they want and they say they deserved it, it’s most likely a lie. I’m not telling you to get yourself into a workaholic mode, but action gets the rewards.
- Nobody owes you anything. Have you ever heard of this before? These 5 advice is not new. In fact, there is nothing new. I’m reframing this article from some tweets I read a few hours ago. Nobody owes you a thing. Does that shock you? Prospects are not going to jump into your lap and say take my money. People don't like your work because you put it on social media. Nobody is going to visit your website because you have one. Nobody owes you anything. You only get what you work for, and that is what you deserve. Are you getting fewer rewards or no rewards? Then put in more work.
- Nobody has figured it out. Not even one person. Not even Solomon figured it out. Life is a process of figuring it out. You look at people and you get jealous and envious and unit think they’ve got it all figured out. They haven’t. They are willing to do the hard work, you’re only holding yourself back. Do the work. You want money? Money is the noun. It’s the thing you want. Now, to get the noun, you need to obey the verb to do, in order to get the noun. Everyone is going through something crazy. Ask the people you so much admire. Talk to them. They make it look wash, but their asses are on fire!
- Nobody really cares. Seriously. Maybe you have noticed, maybe you haven’t. Nobody cares. It’s you and your vision. They don’t care as much as you think. The prospect hardly cares about the gear you use. They don’t even know where the shutter button is. Stop “wasting" money buying things you don’t need. Who are you impressing? Your fellow photographers? Newsflash, they’re not your clients! They will not pay you for your services. So what now? None of them care, let go of your materialism and focus on the essentials. And you know what? The essentials are a few things.
