Many times we think to make money as a photographer, we only need to go out to take pictures. Yes, taking photos is probably the primary source photographers do to make money. In fact, if you have never pressed the shutter button, are you a photographer?

In this brief article I’m going to be sharing with you 3 more ways to make money as a photographer without having to going to take photographs.

  1. Selling products: This is something that most photographers miss out on. First, build your brand or name. Note this: if you are on the internet, you have a brand. Let’s not make this complicated. What products should you sell? You can write and publish books in photography. This will establish you as an authority in your field and others will look up to you. I have published 5 books on photography and I’m going to be working on another soon on marketing in photography.
  2. Selling education: This is not so different from point number 1. What should you sell? Sell courses. You can record yourself teaching photography and sell it on Udemy or Coursera. There are other places where you can sell your educational services, like YouTube. Try out YouTube. You already have a great camera, share your knowledge on YouTube and collect a good number of audience.
  3. Selling insight: This is one of the little things photographers leave out when it comes to charging a prospective client. You charge to meet up with a prospect to share your ideas. This is consulting, telling the prospect what will make their outcome suit them, sharing with them insight when it comes to location, costume, creating a mood board, etc. This costs time. Price accordingly.

This big mistake aspiring photographers make is thinking they can only make money in 1 way. As if there was some kind of nobility in only living off your photo session. There is not, especially in a digital age, you want as many revenue streams as possible.

Try using these 3 more ways to generate income. When you make a name for yourself in something, be quick to diversify. Do not be left behind.
